Windows sit right at the centre of that risk. They’re the largest area of a home’s exterior that isn’t solid wall, and under wildfire conditions they behave very differently than they do under normal weather stress. That difference matters under radiant heat exposure specifically, because tempered glass resists thermal stress cracking far better than standard glass.
Multi-pane glazing helps too. A double or triple-pane unit creates an air gap between panes that acts as a thermal break, slowing how quickly radiant heat transfers through to the interior pane. Triple glazing already carries real energy performance advantages in BC’s climate, and in wildfire-exposed applications, that same multi-pane construction does double duty by adding a layer of thermal resistance between outside heat and inside air.
A common approach in wildfire-resistant glazing packages is to specify at least one tempered pane within a multi-pane unit, sometimes on the exterior face, sometimes the interior, depending on the specific product and testing standard being followed. This is a real, specifiable option, and it’s worth asking for directly if your home is in or near a designated interface zone.
The Honest Conversation About Frame Material
This is the part that deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch, because it affects a real safety decision.
FireSmart Canada’s guidance and several North American wildfire building codes point toward frame materials that resist ignition and don’t deform under sustained heat: materials like fiberglass, aluminum-clad wood, or properly rated metal frames. Standard vinyl frames can soften and deform at temperatures well below what fire-resistant frame materials tolerate, and some wildfire-specific code language in higher-risk US jurisdictions has moved away from vinyl for exactly that reason.
That doesn’t mean vinyl is inappropriate everywhere near a treed area. Risk in wildfire planning is usually assessed in zones extending out from a structure, with the area immediately against the house (sometimes called the home ignition zone) carrying the strictest requirements, and risk decreasing with distance. A home well inside a community, with defensible space and non-combustible landscaping around it, faces a different exposure profile than a home whose walls back directly onto unmanaged forest.

This is less about window design and more about a behavioural practice worth knowing: during an active wildfire evacuation alert or warning, closing all operable windows, even ones with screens, is standard FireSmart guidance, since standard insect screening does very little to stop embers.
Where vents, weep holes, or other envelope openings exist near window installations, ember-resistant mesh screening (typically 1.6mm or finer, non-combustible metal mesh) is part of a complete wildfire-resistant envelope strategy, though this is more a building envelope detail than a window product feature specifically.

Specify tempered glass explicitly if you’re in a moderate exposure zone where multi-pane glazing with tempered components meets local guidance. This is a real, orderable specification, not an aftermarket add-on, and it should be confirmed in writing on your order, not assumed.
Confirm permit and code requirements with your local building department before finalizing product selection, since interface zone requirements vary by municipality and aren’t uniform across BC the way base energy code requirements are.
