What Happens to Your Old Windows After Replacement?

You’ve decided on new windows. You’ve chosen the style, confirmed the glazing package, scheduled installation. The conversation moves to lead times, installation day logistics, cleanup.

Then someone mentions hauling away the old windows and you realize you’ve never thought about this part. Where do they go? Can they be recycled? What actually happens to fifteen windows worth of glass, vinyl, and aluminum once they come out of your walls?

It’s a reasonable question. And as a local manufacturer that’s been making windows in Delta, BC since the 1980s – and takes our green commitment seriously – we think homeowners deserve an honest answer rather than vague reassurances about “responsible disposal.”

The truth is more complicated than most people expect. Some materials recycle well. Others technically can be recycled but rarely are. The glass in your windows is genuinely tricky. And the vinyl – which is by far the most common frame material in Metro Vancouver homes – has until very recently had almost nowhere to go except landfill.

Let’s walk through what’s actually in your old windows, what happens to each material, and what’s changing in Canada right now.

What Old Windows Are Actually Made Of

Before talking about disposal, it helps to understand what you’re dealing with. A typical double-pane vinyl window removed from a Metro Vancouver home contains:

Glass (the majority by weight): Two panes of plate glass sealed together, with a gas-filled cavity between them. Likely argon, possibly just air in older units. The glass represents roughly 80-85% of total window weight – far more material than the frame.

Vinyl (uPVC) frame: The white or colored plastic frame, sash, and any internal reinforcing. PVC – polyvinyl chloride – is a durable thermoplastic that accounts for most of the remaining weight.

Aluminum or steel reinforcement: Many vinyl frames contain metal inserts inside the profiles for structural strength. Not always visible but often present.

Spacer bar: The metal or composite strip separating the two glass panes at the perimeter. Often aluminum in older windows; warm-edge composite spacers in newer high-performance units.

Hardware: Locks, handles, hinges, rollers – typically steel, zinc alloy, or brass.

Sealants and butyl: The compounds sealing the insulated glass unit and bonding components together.

Each material has a different recycling pathway – and different likelihood of actually being recycled rather than landfilled.

The Glass Problem

Glass is endlessly recyclable in theory. Melt it down, reform it, repeat indefinitely. So why isn’t window glass recycled more?

Because window glass and container glass (bottles, jars) are fundamentally different materials.

Container glass is soda-lime glass with a relatively standardized composition. Window glass – technically called plate glass or flat glass – has a different chemical makeup, often including metalite oxide coatings (Low-E), tempering treatments, or laminates that make it incompatible with container glass recycling streams.

This is why the Recycling Council of BC is explicit: window glass cannot go in your blue bin. It’s not accepted in curbside recycling programs in BC because of this compositional difference.

What can happen to window glass in Metro Vancouver:

The most realistic pathway for old window glass is crushing and repurposing as an industrial aggregate – ground into what’s called “cullet” or “Enviro-Grit” used in sandblasting, road construction, or as a cement bulking agent. Some local glazing companies have established relationships with processors who do exactly this. Action Glass, a Metro Vancouver glazing company, has been sending approximately 6.5 tonnes of waste window glass weekly to a crushing facility in Quesnel rather than to landfill – one of the few local examples of genuine window glass diversion.

The honest reality: most old window glass in Metro Vancouver goes to landfill. The processing infrastructure for diverting it at scale doesn’t exist locally in a comprehensive way. Some installers make the effort to separate and deliver to processors; most don’t.

Double-pane sealed units add complexity: Insulated glass units can’t just be broken up and crushed without releasing the gas fill and dealing with the seal compounds and spacer bar. Proper processing requires separating the spacer and sealant before the glass can be recycled – adding time and cost that most disposal situations don’t accommodate.

Vinyl Frames: The Landfill Reality (and What’s Changing)

Here’s the uncomfortable truth about vinyl window recycling in Canada: until very recently, virtually all of it went to landfill.

Approximately 40 million pounds of vinyl from old windows gets landfilled annually in Canada. That’s not a small number. Vinyl is technically recyclable – PVC can be mechanically recycled multiple times before degrading beyond use. The technology exists. But the collection infrastructure, separation processes, and economics haven’t existed to make it happen at scale in North America.

In Europe, post-consumer vinyl window recycling has been established for years. Old frames go back into the system, get ground down, and the recycled PVC gets used in new window profiles, pipes, fencing, and other applications. The circular economy works there because collection systems and economic incentives were deliberately built.

In Canada, the industry is now trying to catch up.

Project Win-Finity: In September 2025, the Vinyl Institute of Canada launched a national pilot program specifically aimed at recycling post-consumer PVC windows. The program – called Project Win-Finity – started in the Greater Toronto Area with a network of window installers collecting removed vinyl frames in on-site bins rather than taking them to landfill. The bins go to a glass recycler where glass is separated, then remaining vinyl goes to a plastics recycler to be assessed for remanufacturing into new products.

The goal is to establish a blueprint that can be scaled to any province, including BC. It’s a significant step – the first structured post-consumer vinyl window recycling program in Canada. But it’s a pilot program currently operating in Ontario. BC infrastructure doesn’t yet have equivalent collection networks.

What this means for your windows now: If your vinyl frames are being removed by a Metro Vancouver installer today, the honest answer is they’re very likely going to landfill. Not because installers are careless, but because no viable alternative collection system yet exists locally. As Project Win-Finity expands and its model gets adopted provincially, this should change. But we’re not there yet.

Aluminum Frames: The Genuinely Good News

If your existing windows have aluminum frames – common in 1970s-1990s Metro Vancouver construction – their end-of-life story is actually positive.

Aluminum is one of the most valuable recyclable materials on the planet. It can be melted down and recast indefinitely without quality loss. Recycling aluminum requires only 5% of the energy needed to produce virgin aluminum from bauxite ore.

Crucially, the scrap metal market creates genuine economic incentive for aluminum recycling. Regional Recycling depots in Metro Vancouver explicitly accept aluminum window frames (without glass) and pay scrap value. Metal dealers across the Lower Mainland take aluminum frames readily.

The catch: Glass needs to be separated from aluminum frames before they’re recyclable as scrap metal. Old aluminum sliders with glass still in them can’t just go to a metal recycler. The glass needs to come out first. Some installers do this; others don’t because it takes time.

If you’re having old aluminum-framed windows removed, ask your installer specifically whether they’re separating frames from glass for metal recycling. This is one disposal question where the right answer is achievable and economically sensible.

Steel and Hardware

The steel reinforcing inside vinyl frames and the hardware (locks, hinges, handles) are fully recyclable as scrap metal. In practice, when windows go to landfill they go as complete units – hardware and all. Separation at the recycling depot level is possible but rarely happens with residential window disposal volumes.

Brass hardware (some older fittings and locks) has meaningful scrap value. If you’re removing old windows yourself before replacement, salvaging brass hardware is worth doing.

Wood Frames: The Complicated Case

Wood-framed windows are less common in Metro Vancouver’s post-war housing stock but exist in heritage homes and some older construction.

Sound, undamaged wood frames can potentially be salvaged and reused. Habitat for Humanity ReStores accept usable building materials including windows in good condition. Architectural salvage yards occasionally take distinctive or heritage-appropriate wood windows.

Wood that’s rotted, painted with lead paint (possible in pre-1978 homes), or treated with preservatives that may contain hazardous compounds needs more careful handling. Lead-painted wood shouldn’t just go to a general landfill without assessment.

For most wood window removal in Metro Vancouver: if frames are genuinely sound, explore donation before disposal. If they’re at end of life with no reuse potential, landfill is the practical reality.

What Actually Happens on Installation Day

Here’s what typically happens when installers remove your old windows:

Old windows come out and go into the installer’s truck or trailer. At the end of the day, they need to be disposed of. The available options in Metro Vancouver today:

Transfer stations and landfills: Metro Vancouver operates transfer stations accepting construction and demolition waste. Tipping fees apply – roughly $120-$180 per tonne currently. For a typical whole-home window replacement, old windows might total 200-400kg, so disposal fees are modest but real. This is where most removed windows end up.

Scrap metal dealers (for aluminum frames): Some installers separate aluminum frames and take them to scrap dealers, partially offsetting disposal costs. This happens more when aluminum has obvious value and separation is feasible.

Residential recycling programs: Generally not applicable at scale. Metro Vancouver Recycles and Recycle BC don’t have specific pathways for complete window units.

Donation/salvage: For windows in genuinely usable condition – sound operation, intact seals, reasonable remaining life – Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Metro Vancouver accepts donations. This is rare with replacement windows since they’re typically being replaced because they’re failing.

The Bigger Picture: Embodied Carbon and Lifecycle Thinking

Window disposal is one part of a larger environmental equation. The most environmentally honest way to think about it:

Manufacturing new windows has an environmental cost – energy and raw materials to produce vinyl, glass, aluminum, hardware. This embodied carbon is real regardless of what happens to old windows.

Replacing aging windows with high-performance units reduces operating energy – less heating and cooling energy consumption over decades. For most Metro Vancouver homes, this payback in reduced operating emissions exceeds the embodied carbon of new windows within a few years.

Locally manufactured windows have lower embodied transport emissions than products shipped across Canada or imported from offshore. This is one genuine advantage of choosing windows made in Delta, BC over national brands manufactured in Ontario or imported from the US.

Long-lasting windows generate less waste than cheap windows replaced repeatedly. A 30-year window creates one disposal event. Three 10-year windows create three disposal events plus three manufacturing cycles. Choosing quality that lasts is itself an environmental decision.

The honest conclusion: the most environmentally responsible window decision isn’t primarily about what happens to old windows at disposal – it’s about installing windows that last long enough that disposal happens rarely, from a manufacturer close enough that transport emissions are minimized.

What You Can Do

If you want to minimize the environmental impact of your window replacement:

Ask your installer specifically about disposal. Do they separate aluminum frames for metal recycling? Do they take glass to a processor rather than straight to landfill? Some do. Some don’t. The question creates accountability.

Consider donating functional windows before replacement. If you’re upgrading windows that are still operational (for energy performance reasons rather than failure), Habitat for Humanity ReStore may accept them. Call ahead – they’re selective about condition.

Separate aluminum frames yourself if doing any DIY removal. Regional Recycling depots in Metro Vancouver accept aluminum window frames at scrap metal value. Glass needs to be removed first.

Ask about Project Win-Finity availability. As the Vinyl Institute of Canada’s vinyl window recycling pilot expands beyond Ontario, watch for BC participation. If your installer is affiliated with Fenestration Canada members participating in the program, ask whether they’re routing removed vinyl into the recycling stream rather than landfill.
