The original paint provides a baseline. Even if you can’t perfectly match the aged color, a small touch-up area isn’t noticeably different.
Foiled Frames
A damaged foil section can’t be touched up. The foil is either intact or it isn’t. Your options:
Replace the entire foil: Strip all foil from the damaged frame section (tedious, time-consuming), re-prep the surface, apply new foil. But the new foil won’t match foil that’s been weathering for 15 years. Color and finish differences will be obvious.

UV penetrates the foil to varying degrees depending on color and opacity. It degrades the adhesive layer underneath. As adhesive breaks down, bond strength decreases, edges lift, and failure accelerates.
South and west-facing exposures: These receive the most intense UV and heat. Foil on these orientations fails significantly faster than north or east-facing windows. You might see 12-year life on a shaded north exposure and 6-year life on a south exposure.
Paint doesn’t have this differential failure pattern because it bonds chemically rather than mechanically.
Moisture Infiltration

More typical residential application. Good but not exceptional materials and installation. Edge lifting often visible by 7-8 years.
Budget Foil or DIY: 3-7 years
Lower-quality materials or inexperienced application. Failure can begin within 3-5 years, particularly on challenging exposures.

When Foil Fails: Your Limited Options

Strip and Re-Foil
Remove all old foil (tedious work around complex profiles and hardware), clean adhesive residue completely, re-prep surface, apply new foil.
Essentially the full job over again. Labor-intensive, expensive, and the new foil will fail on the same timeline as the original.
Strip and Paint Instead
Many homeowners switch to paint at this stage, having experienced foil’s limitations firsthand. Surface prep from foil removal provides good foundation for painting.
This is actually a common progression: try foil, experience its 7-10 year lifespan, switch to painting for longer-term solution.
Partial Re-Foil
Rarely works well. Matching the original foil color and finish after years of weathering is nearly impossible. Edges between old and new foil are visibly obvious. The patch usually fails faster than surrounding original foil.
Leave It
Some homeowners just live with lifting edges and deteriorating appearance until complete window replacement becomes necessary for other reasons.
Full Frame Replacement

Surface Preparation
Critical importance: Paint adhesion depends entirely on surface prep. Skip steps and paint will fail regardless of quality.
Clean thoroughly with detergent removing all dirt, grease, and environmental contamination, rinse completely, let dry, light sanding (220-grit) to degloss surface and create mechanical tooth for primer adhesion, vacuum dust, final wipe with isopropyl alcohol.
This isn’t optional. Contaminated or glossy surfaces prevent proper adhesion.
Primer Application
Bonding primer essential: Standard primers don’t work on vinyl. You need primers specifically formulated for PVC/vinyl with adhesion promoters.
Products like INSL-X STIX, KILZ Adhesion, or similar vinyl-bonding primers create the foundation for topcoat adhesion.
Application: thin, even coat; full cure before topcoating (often 24 hours); exterior frames need weather-resistant bonding primer.
Paint Selection
Vinyl-safe paint mandatory: Not all exterior paints work on vinyl. You need 100% acrylic or urethane-modified acrylic specifically approved for vinyl application.
Light Reflectance Value (LRV) critical for dark colors: Dark colors absorb heat. Vinyl warps when overheated. Most manufacturers require LRV ≥55 for vinyl application unless using special IR-reflective pigments.
This means genuinely dark colors (black, dark bronze, deep charcoal) require vinyl-safe dark color systems – more expensive but necessary to prevent warping.
Application
Two thin coats better than one thick coat, respect recoat windows per manufacturer specs, don’t clog drainage/weep holes, protect hardware during application or remove and reinstall.
Professional application recommended: While DIY is possible, professional spray application typically delivers superior finish and coverage around complex profiles.
