Traditional Slider Windows
One sash slides horizontally behind the other. Handle unlocks, you push the moving panel sideways, it rolls on tracks. Simple, familiar, proven over decades.
Opening area: 50% maximum. When one panel slides behind the other, half your window opening stays blocked.
Sealing mechanism: Brush or fin seals where panels meet and contact the frame. These compress minimally – the window isn’t pulled tight against weatherstripping.
Locking: Typically single-point latch at panel junction.
Our Primera single-slider windows represent the best execution of this design – premium vinyl, quality hardware, proper weatherstripping – but the fundamental operation remains traditional North American sliding function.
Tilt & Turn Windows
Single handle controls dual operation. Turn 90° and the window tilts inward from the top for ventilation. Turn 180° and the entire window swings inward like a door.
Opening area: 100% in turn mode. The entire window frame becomes open space.
Sealing mechanism: Compression seals around the complete perimeter. When the window is closed, the sash is pulled tightly against the frame’s weatherstripping by a multi-point locking mechanism, creating a very tight seal.
Locking: Multi-point system securing sash to frame at 6-8 locations simultaneously.

Why Tilt & Turn Wins on Paper
From an energy perspective, casement and tilt and turn windows offer superior performance. Their compression seals create a much tighter barrier against drafts and air leakage than the brush or fin seals used in sliders or hung windows.
The compression seal difference is measurable. When you lock a tilt & turn window, the multi-point mechanism pulls the sash against weatherstripping around the entire perimeter, compressing it tightly. Air infiltration drops to near-zero.
Sliders rely on brush seals or fin seals that make contact but don’t compress significantly. Air can still infiltrate at these interfaces, particularly as seals age and wear from repeated sliding motion.
Tested airtightness: Quality tilt & turn windows achieve 0.5-1.0 air changes per hour at 50 pascals pressure differential. Quality sliders achieve 1.5-2.5 ACH@50Pa. Lower numbers mean less air leakage.
For BC’s 2026 energy standards and Step Code compliance, this difference is significant. Buildings targeting Step 4-5 need exceptional envelope performance. Tilt & turn windows contribute to hitting those targets; sliders make it harder.
Where Sliders Perform Adequately
Not every window in your home needs maximum performance. Bedrooms, bathrooms, utility rooms – spaces where you’re not constantly heating/cooling or where the window stays closed most of the time.
Quality sliders like our Primera series achieve perfectly acceptable U-factors (0.26-0.30 W/m²K) with proper glazing and frame design. They meet current BC Building Code easily and provide good thermal performance for most applications.

Tilt Mode Changes Everything
Tilt and turn windows offer the best of both worlds – secure, trickle ventilation in the tilt position and a wide-open egress in the turn position.
The tilt function solves Vancouver’s specific climate challenge: how do you ventilate continuously without letting rain in?
Tilted position: Window opens inward from the top. Hot air escapes at ceiling level (exactly where it accumulates). Cool air enters from bottom. Natural convection creates constant airflow. Rain can’t enter because the window tilts inward.
Vancouver’s 192 rainy days annually make this critical. You can leave tilt & turn windows tilted open basically year-round – venting cooking heat, bathroom humidity, bedroom stuffiness – without weather concerns.
Try that with a slider. Horizontal opening means rain enters directly if the window’s open during our frequent drizzles.
When Sliders Work Fine
Situations where you open windows only during dry weather: bedroom windows you crack open on clear summer nights, basement windows for occasional ventilation.
Sliders provide straightforward horizontal airflow. Open one side fully, get 50% of the window opening for cross-breeze. Simple, effective when weather cooperates.
For mild weather ventilation without the tilt function’s continuous draft-free operation, sliders do the job at lower cost.
Security: Hardware Makes the Difference
Break-in attempts target windows. Hardware quality determines resistance.
Multi-Point Locking Advantage
Multi-point locks offer enhanced safety. Energy Efficiency: Air-tight seals reduce energy loss.
Tilt & turn windows lock at 6-8 points around the frame perimeter. Attempting to pry open a locked tilt & turn window means defeating multiple locking points simultaneously – extraordinarily difficult.
Slider windows typically use single-point latches where the panels meet. Pry at this junction with enough force and the latch can fail.
Reality check: Most break-ins target doors, not windows. Properly installed windows of either type with quality locks provide reasonable security. The multi-point advantage is real but probably won’t determine whether your home gets burglarized.
Tilt Position Security
One unique advantage: you can leave tilt & turn windows tilted open for ventilation while away. The opening at the top is too small for entry. The multi-point lock remains engaged in tilt mode.
Can’t do that with sliders – if they’re open enough for ventilation, they’re open enough for entry.

Interior Cleaning Access
The in-swing function allows for easy cleaning of exterior glass. This means you can safely clean the exterior of your windows from the inside your home. There is no need for precarious ladders or extra preparation.
Every window in your home can be cleaned from inside. Ground floor, second floor, third floor – doesn’t matter. Turn the handle, swing the window inward, wipe both sides. Done.
Upper floor advantage: You’ll never lean out an upper-floor window with spray bottle and cloth again. You’ll never hire window cleaners for exterior access. This alone can justify the premium for upper-floor installations.
Slider Exterior Cleaning
You’re climbing ladders or you’re hiring someone. No way around it. The exterior glass faces outside and can’t swing inward.
Some modern sliders include tilt-in mechanisms where panels angle inward slightly for cleaning, but this only works for certain slider styles and still doesn’t provide the same complete access as full inward swing.
Cost Reality

Primary living spaces: Large windows in living rooms, dining areas, kitchens where you want maximum performance, continuous ventilation capability, and easy maintenance.
Upper floors: Where interior cleaning access eliminates ongoing window cleaning costs and safety concerns.
Step Code compliance: Projects targeting Step 4-5 where envelope airtightness is critical.
Long-term ownership: If you’re staying in your home 15+ years, the energy savings and reduced maintenance costs pay back the premium.
When Sliders Are Smarter
Secondary bedrooms: Where windows stay closed most of the time and occasional ventilation on nice days suffices.
Basement windows: Where you’re unlikely to operate windows frequently and cleaning access isn’t critical.
Budget constraints: Quality sliders provide good performance at moderate cost. Investing premium in your main living areas and using sliders elsewhere balances performance and budget.
Space limitations: Tilt & turn windows need interior clearance for inward swing. If you have furniture, counters, or deep window sills blocking swing path, sliders work better.
